About Mr Ahmed Hussien
Mr Ahmed Hussien is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Corneal Service Lead in Newcastle, specialising in cataract, corneal and refractive surgery. With more than 14 years of ophthalmic experience and over 6,000 procedures performed, he combines advanced surgical expertise with a highly personalised approach to care.
He graduated from Alexandria University Faculty of Medicine in Egypt and completed his ophthalmology residency training there. He was awarded a Master’s degree in Ophthalmology in 2016 and later completed a PhD in Ophthalmology and endothelial keratoplasty in 2021, with research focused on advanced corneal transplantation techniques, including Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and its combination with cataract surgery. His work in this field has been published in the ophthalmic literature.
After moving to the UK, Mr Hussien undertook two advanced corneal fellowships. The first was at Southend University Hospital, followed by further fellowship training in corneal surgery, external eye disease and refractive surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. These fellowships provided extensive experience in complex corneal disease, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery and refractive procedures.
Mr Hussien has worked at consultant level since 2020 and has been on the GMC Specialist Register since 2021. His qualifications include FRCOphth, FRCSEd (Ophth), and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery.
Alongside his clinical practice, he has a strong commitment to education, training and research. He is involved in the supervision and training of ophthalmology residents and fellows, and currently contributes to undergraduate, postgraduate and international medical education in Newcastle. His academic and professional roles have included College Tutor, Royal College of Ophthalmologists Examiner, and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University.
Mr Hussien has authored and contributed to a number of publications in cataract, corneal and retinal disease, and regularly contributes to professional courses, workshops, conferences and surgical training. His research interests include corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, premium lens implantation and laser vision correction.
His approach to patient care is centred on precision, clear communication and individualised treatment. He takes time to understand each patient’s concerns, visual needs and lifestyle before recommending the most appropriate treatment, with particular emphasis on achieving the best possible visual outcome while maintaining safety and long-term eye health.
Beyond clinical practice
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Hussien is a Royal College Examiner, College Tutor, Honorary Lecturer at Newcastle University and Regional Representative to Council for the Northern Region. He regularly contributes to ophthalmic research, teaching and international conferences.
